She could hear and feel a heavy body thud onto the bed above her. Breathing, a raspy breathing, so loud it was deafening. She could hear the creature, the demon, whatever the hell it was, sniffing around on the bed. Looking for her, seeking her. Phaedra lay there in the dark, under her bed, breathing quietly, trying to get her senses and trying to decide the best course of action. She heard the noise of the bedsprings and knew she must do something, anything, and quickly. She began crawling on all fours towards the walk-in closet, perhaps finding some shelter there. The thing had landed on the floor behind her. She could hear sniffing and the padding of feet, behind her it felt like it was following her. As she entered the closet she swung the door shut behind her, but something stopped it and blocked it from closing as it remained ajar. Now she could see eyes glowing in the dark, peeking through the half open door. Eyes glowing, yellow eyes, she froze in fear, her breath taken from her.

Excerpt from Chapter One:

Oh God, now she remembered everything!  Afraid to open her eyes, this warm heavy weight pinning her down could not be good.  Mama would be angry.  She often warned her to be more careful; to leave immediately after the encounter but it had been so long since Kyra had lost control.  She had been so lonely and he‘d reminded her of Thorne!  Now this— still in his room now, the…. what the hell time is it anyway?  Oh God, Mama would really be angry!

Excerpt from Chapter Two

During the party the huge cats leapt and crashed through windows, some slunk through doorways.  Leaping, ripping, and tearing into the children of Atlantis.  Stefan and his men fought them, yelling out to the women and the children to hide and get away but it was too late.  Phaedra stood by Stefan’s side, against his wishes, as did his elite twelve that were closest to him.  One by one the men were overcome and torn into shreds.  Phaedra was attacked by one of the panthers and held down as Stefan was killed before her eyes.  His throat ripped out, as she lay pinned unable to help him.  She would never forget the look in his eyes of fear and of anger.  His head lay next to hers on the floor as she watched the passion, the very life drain out of his warm green eyes.  There was nothing she could do except what she did, scream—scream and scream!

Excerpt from Chapter Three:

Her brain kept racing frantically from one scenario to another.  If she tried to move the cat would tear her apart feasting on her soft skin.  If she remained still perhaps the beast would become bored and would move away.  Phaedra's heart was beating wildly she opened her eyes it was becoming difficult to breath with the heavy paws on her chest.  The cat was sniffing around her face then suddenly it opened its mouth very wide.  With a loud grow, the huge jaws moved down over her entire face, now she knew she was dead.  As the giant mouth closed over her head, everything went black...

Excerpt from Chapter Four:

Veloras blood ran cold as her heart clenched.  There in the room was a beautiful little girl with chocolaty skin, black hair, amber eyes and rosy pink cheeks tied to a bed, on her back, clad in only torn clothes.  A woman stood by the bed with a bottle of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.  The woman was laughing and taunting the girl.

"You are ugly and worthless.  ‘Nobody’ and no-one would ever want you.  You should be thankful we give you a roof over your head.  You’re so ungrateful you cant even keep the house cleaned properly or fix our dinner, you worthless wretch, you ‘Nobody’.”

The woman set down the beer and slapped the little girl.  As she struck her the little girl tried not to cry out.  She had learned crying only brought the woman more laughter and to her, more pain.

This story has fascinated me. I won't say I loved it as that has a totally different meaning to what I want to convey here. It goes beyond that. Ancient Echoes is about the power of three strong, yet cautious women: Phaedra, Velora and Kyra. Although Kyra is the main character in the book, Phaedra, her mother and Velora, her sister, have significant roles in this story.

The women are the daughters of Atlantis, who survived in a cave for a century after the City of Atlantis - their home, was submerged into the deep waters of the sea. The survival in the cave gave powerful abilities to the women: immortality and telepathy.

Phaedra is a prisoner in her own home, afraid to leave and fearing the demons of her past. Velora, a shape-shifter, is a rescuer of twelve lost children taken from the reservation. Her family of shape-shifters come handy when an unfortunate event befalls Kyra.

Kyra, the widow of Thorne, mourns his unfortunate passing away which leaves her alone and vulnerable. In a turn of events, she becomes bait to an unruly clan of shape-shifters who want to tear and possibly kill her. They want Atlantis, with or without her...

The last chapters convey the telepathic conversations between Phaedra, Velora and Kyra when Kyra is taken prisoner on a boat. Will Velora be able to save her sister? Will Phaedra be able to overcome her fears as her past comes to haunt her all over again?

Katrina Bowlin-Mackenzie writes well with words to entice us forward into the story. Her pen weaves a relationship of supernatural/fantasy magic that will delight the reader.

I recommend this book whole-heartedly - a damn good read!

This book swept me up in it's beautiful tale of lovely things and people lost and brought back again. I kept thinking of the characters long after I finished the last page. Each one was memorable and tugged at my heart because of the struggles they faces. Very well done. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
